William Turner

William Turner

Hahnemühle William Turner is a traditional mould-made watercolour paper with a coating for inkjet printing. The white cotton paper does not contain optical brightness, but stands out due to its fine but highly pronounced textured surface. The matt inkjet coating creates impressive contrasts and deep blacks, resulting in images with outstanding depth. William Turner is acid and lignin free, meeting the most exacting of age resistance.

William Turner 310

William Turner is a truly unique paper, difficult to find an equivalent for among competitors. Its almost sandpaper-like texture feels rough yet at the same time pleasant to the touch. I initially expected such a textured surface to lose fine details, but the opposite is true—the detail rendering is excellent. For me, this paper works especially well for black-and-white photography.

It’s not a paper you can use for every image, as it demands a specific type of photograph. Images with stronger structure and texture suit it best. Because of its pronounced surface, I recommend printing in A4 and larger formats.

In terms of tonality, it is very similar to Photo Rag. Compared to Museum Etching—another textured paper—William Turner is a classic off-white, while Museum Etching leans warmer and delivers slightly stronger contrast.
